What is it????

This item has us foxed for quite a while. It was in the old catalogue as military dog tags, but it didn't look like any dog tags that anyone else could recognise.

Then we twigged. It allows "Cow #126" to browse on an Avon Shire Common in 1949.

How did we realise?

We looked at this one:

Which appears to be for "Cow #1074", whose permit expires (probably in common with all its sisters) on 1 April 1931.

This one doesn't show ear at the hole like the top one - possibly it was never issued.

So it's not a Dog Tag - it's a Cow Tag
