One hundred years ago today, five of the first eight men to enlist from Stratford left Australia.

We have only just identified this photograph from the collection, that shows them at Broadmeadows prior to departure.

The men are, standing, Charlie GARDEN, Jim GARDEN and Willie MITCHELL. Seated, Albert STEWART and Herb PETERS.

Charlie GARDEN and Albert STEWART survived the war, and came home at the end a Regimental Sergeant-Major and Lieutenant respectively. Jim GARDEN was injured at Gallipoli, and invalided home in 1916. Willie MITCHELL and Herb PETERS were killed in action on Gallipoli. Willie was the first man from Stratford to die, and the first of three brothers.

Sometimes, records of some of our soldiers are harder to find than others.

Sgt Harold Findley is one such.
He appears as a casualty on the Stratford school honour board, but no-where else locally.

Orphaned early, he grew up with his cousins the Bennetts, mainly just across the border in the East Gippsland Shire. Finding his details were made even more difficult, as he actually enlisted with a cousin in the Canadian army, as that was where he was when war broke out. It also does not help that he is sometimes referred to as a Finlay or a Findlay.

Here is a newspaper report of his death:

DANDENONG HERO REPORTED MISSING.

Sergeant Harold Findley, D.C.M. News has been received by Mrs E. Meeking, of "Mena" Hemming street, Dandenong, from the Canadian Records Office, London, that her only brother, Sergeant Harold Findley, D.C.M., 27 years of age. of the Canadian Scottish Battalion, has been posted as missing Sgt. Findley, who is a native of Stratford, left this State some years ago with John Bennett, his cousin, to seek his fortune. Mr Bennett is also a Stratford native.

The two eventually settled in Canada, where they became fairly prosperous. At the outbreak of the war they responded immediately to the call for volunteers, sacrificed all their prospects in civil life, and were part of the first contingent to leave Canada for France, where they have been fighting ever since.
Bennett has been twice wounded, and has now returned to the trenches for the third time. Until October 8 last Sgt. Findley had never received a wound, or been ill for a single day, although he had taken part in 16 battles and many night raids. He won the D.C.M. for a signal act of bravery. He recovered and brought in from No Man's Land the bodies of Col. Lewis (the inventor of the famous Lewis machine-gun), and Capt. Gale, both of the Royal Flying Corps. They were killed, through their machines being brought down by the enemy.

Pte. Bennett, in a letter to his cousins, Mr Meeking and Mrs Warriner, graphically described the engagement which led to Sgt. Findley being posted missing; He wrote : "No doubt you have already received the official notification that Harry is wounded and missing. He was severely wounded on October 8, just at a time when the remnants of our battalion were forced to retire from a German trench which they had captured. Harry, like several others of our brave lads, was too badly injured to be taken out except by the special means which the stretcher bearers have. In the teeth of the battle these could not be procured. I cannot tell you how much I wish I had been at his side. I should have got him out had it been humanly possible. But I was in England at the time, just having got over the wounds I received on June 13"

It was a very hard blow to me when I returned yesterday to find Harry was not here. I have spoken to two of the chaps who were with him, and they gave me all the information they could. Our battalion had reached the German trench, though we lost heavily. The attack failed on our right and left, and this enabled the enemy to counter attack on both flanks." The remnants of our brave lads held on for many hours without reinforcements, but superior numbers forced them to leave the trench. It was while leading his men in trying to hold off the Hun that Harry fell. Our little band had to retire across the open, literally scrambling from shell-hole to shell-hole under a withering fire, and it was impossible to take the wounded with them. They assured me that they bound Harry up and did all they could for him before they left the trench, and that, if he had been picked up and tended by the enemy, he had a reasonable chance of recovery. I think it quite reasonable, though prepared for the worst, to still hope for the best.

If it should prove the worst, it will always be a source of comfort to know that your soldier-brother was one to be proud of. As a comrade he was loved by all, and as a non-commissioned officer he was a favourite, admired and trusted by his men, and liked by everybody. Those who are left are full of praise of his fearlessness and energy in battle. "I feel a warrior's pride in him, and if the God of Battles sees fit to call me I only hope to go out as Harry did, and to give as good an account or myself. Surely our cause is worth falling for, and I feel sure all the numberless heroes who suffer and die for it will yet meet again when Gabriel sounds his last rally."

We are hard at work putting the finishing touches to our World War I display. It takes up one entire side of the Museum, and has really brought home to us the number of significant items we have in the collection. So we might be posting about them for a while.

We have also been delighted to receive a number of items on loan - the largest being this model of a soldier in Lighthorse uniform. Thank You, to Rick Cove for the Light Horseman.

We have also taken the opportunity to re-display Alice Mitchell's sewing machine - this time with a younger photograph of Alice, and those of her three brothers who were killed in action - two in the same battle. As her world crashed around her, Alice just kept sewing for the troops, making a set number of items each week, many on this machine, for the entire war.

One of our other items on display for the first time, is Archie's Quilt.

Archibald James Bower enlisted in World War I in November 1915, and was killed in action in France in August 1916.

Before he left Australia, he drew designs on cotton for his mother, Harriet Bower nee Harper, to embroider a quilt - mainly flowers, butterflies and moths. Mrs Bower finished the quilt in white candlewicking. It was then for many years on the bed of her grandson, Archibald William Luxford.
He went to sleep every night, knowing the designs were drawn by the uncle he had never known, after whom he had been named.

We look forward to telling you more about items in our exhibition - feel free to drop in 10am to 3pm on Tuesdays.Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06205010291496207355noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25563447.post-78643328104239978872014-08-17T09:41:00.003+10:002015-02-24T13:36:22.009+11:00They Gave Their Utmost

We have just finished binding They Gave Their Utmost: World War I for Louie Riggall, Alice Mitchell and Annie Whitelaw. This is a joint effort between Stratford and District Historical Society and Maffra and District Historical Society.

One of the most exciting things is that, while preparing this book, we were fortunate that a member of Miss Mitchell's family was able to give us a copy of a photograph of her when she was young.

This is Miss Alice Mitchell of Stratford, aged 22. It was at this time that she said goodbye to three brothers and young man who she was "very fond of" - we are now told there was no formal engagement. All four were killed in action. We did not until now know the name of Miss Mitchell's friend - it was Herb Peters.

The book will be available on Tuesdays at the Museum. The assistance of Miss Mitchell's family in piecing this together has been very much appreciated.

Louie Riggall was a Red Cross volunteer from Tinamba, who died on service in France in 1918. Annie Whitelaw, from Briagolong, sent six sons to war, three were killed in action and one died a short time after his return. Her headstone in the Briagolong cemetery records her loss.

The books, which are 44 pages, comb bound, sell at $12 plus $3.50 package and post. Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06205010291496207355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25563447.post-89942378232301993472014-08-04T15:16:00.000+10:002014-08-04T15:22:47.871+10:00WWI Declared

Can anyone out there name any of the students in Grades 5, 6 and 7, at Stratford State School, probably in 1954. We know that is Darryl Mildenhall back right, but have no other names as yet. Next time he is in the museum we will try to pin him down and see what he can do, but in the meantime, if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

We have been advised that we have been granted $1,000 under the 2014 Exxon Mobil Australia Volunteer Involvement Program (VIP) Grant. This program supports employees, in our case member Tony Malady, who volunteer in the community by supporting their efforts with a $1,000 donation to assist the work of their community organisation.

In our case it is especially appropriate, as it will materially assist with the outfitting of the extension to George's Shed, which has now reached lock-up stage. George was an Esso employee, and this was the project on which he was working at the time of his death.
NEWS FLASH - for a very limited time we have on display the dress worn in 1927 at Briagolong by Mary Elizabeth Noy, when she married Eric Lee.

This stunning, beaded dress, with veil, headpiece, train, horse-shoe and other accessories has not been on display before, and caused a sensation for the Shakespeare Festival Village Fair.

It was accompanied by this hand-coloured original photograph on loan, showing the dress worn by the bride. Like other local brides, she had it carefully packed for a photograph to be taken in Melbourne on her honeymoon, and she is wearing a different veil and headpiece.

The Society is deeply saddened to announce the death this morning of our very much loved vice-president and life member,

George Parker.

George has led the team that totally restored our museum, built the shed, extended the shed, fenced the grounds, and maintained and fixed whatever needed fixing. And more.

With time, I am sure we can attempt to write just how much George meant to us, but all we can do now is be sad that he has lost his long battle. Sleep well, George.

Our love and thoughts are with his wife Judy, and their family.

Exciting news is that the Stratford Sentinel and Briagolong Express is now online though Trove - the National Library website for old newspapers.

The whole run is there, from 1911 to 1916 at http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/title/607

This means you can now read the paper, and get a wonderful insight into life in early Stratford and Briagolong.

The 1914-1916 section was funded as part of the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War I. The Stratford and District Historical Society, with assistance from the Briagolong CRG, Briagolong Lions and Briagolong Senior Citizens. The total cost for 1911 to 1913 was just over $1,500.

For a simple search – yes, you can search it – just put a word in the box at top right, and click on “limit to issues of this title”.

For a more advanced search, click on “advanced search” at top right. Then, for example, put Briagolong in the “all of these words” box, click on “search headings only” and scroll down through the papers and click Stratford Sentinel and Briagolong Express.
It is also helpful if you click on “Article” and sort the last box to “By Date, Earliest first”.
That way you get all the Briagolong reports, and you can follow things in order.

If you want to see what crime occurred in teh area (and all sorts of other things) put the words "Stratford" and "court" in the "all of these words" box - but without the talkies.

Thanks to all who helped with the funding.

The other local papers that cover Stratford already on there are the Gippsland Guardian (1855-1868), Gippsland Times (1861-1954), Maffra Spectator (1882-1920) and Gippsland Mercury 1914-1918.

Alice Maggie Mitchell was born 1891 at Stratford, Gippsland, Victoria, the daughter of James Mitchell and Lucy nee Elston. Her father worked as a labourer.

Alice
Mitchell lost three brothers during World War I - one at Gallipoli in
1915, then two in one day in France in 1916, and her fiancee. Despite
that she stuck to a target of making a number of items for troops each
week. Each week, for the duration of the war, she knitted two pairs of
socks, and made a flannel singlet, a shirt and a pair of pyjamas.

Although undocumented, she presumably repeated a similar task in World War II.

Alice
joined the Australian Red Cross in 1914, when it was first formed, and
was formally recognised in 1974 as one of its longest-serving members.
She spent all her life in Stratford, working as a dressmaker, and never
married.

Alice's machine, a 1909 Singer she inherited from her
mother, on which she sewed for the troops in two world wars, was
bequeathed to the Stratford and District Historical Society after her

We have two new exhibitions ready for visitors.

The first is "Christening Gowns and More (Inspired by the Birth of Prince George)". We have three christening gowns in our own collection, plus a petticoat for one, and assorted bonnets and bootees. Augmented with some stunning modern silk knitting according to patterns of about 1912, our very own baptismal font, and items on loan, we have an exhibition "Fit for a Prince".

The second exhibition is a wide ranging look at our collection to see how people were "Keeping Warm in Winter." Items range from the coat made from a blanket in the 1940s, when fabric rationing was in force, through our range of early heaters to a number of hand-knitted blankets and other personal apparel.

Both exhibitions will remain in place until December. Our one of early lamps and lighting be remaining for a short time longer as well.Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06205010291496207355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25563447.post-84073015747931024892013-07-24T19:31:00.002+10:002013-07-24T19:31:53.503+10:00National Family History Month

August is National Family History Month, so we are celebrating by bringing out our 1918 cloth embroidered with the signatures of many local people. It was compiled for the Methodist Church, but many other people are included. You can find a full list of the names HERE.

As part of the month, we will have a special day, from 10am to 3pm, on Tuesday 27 August, where we waive research fees for the day, and have people ready and waiting to help you find your families in the local records. Of special interest are our indexes to grocer's records for the 1880s and 1890s where you can find what your family ate (or drank!), and the school rolls from the 1890s onwards.

If that does not grab you, how about checking out the indexes to payments to the local Nightman's clients in the 1930s and 1940s?

Or, failing everything else, you can list your interest in your families, in case someone else contacts us asking about them.

While some of the earlier issues are yet to be fully uploaded, if you find an article you want by searching, that is not yet loaded, you can click on the little orange envelope, and you will be e-mailed when that article is fully uploaded - some time in the next month.
You can search the title HERE, by typing your search term into the box on the top right, and clicking on the "Limit to issues of this title", also at top right.

Funding to place the title online (for $7,300), came from a Wellington Shire Community Grant, contributions from the members of the Wellington Heritage Network (and supporters) and the Gippsland Prospectors and Miners.Lindahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06205010291496207355noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25563447.post-3796225124011382742013-03-05T11:35:00.001+11:002013-08-13T10:36:36.471+10:00Heritage DayWe have set Sunday 20 October 2013 for our next Farm Heritage Day at Pine Lodge, Stratford
